Description

This is a series of regular workshops to drive alignment of radio astronomy data processing systems amongst large radio astronomy facilities.

The current state is that many facilities are working on updating their data processing systems to deal with the needs of new telescopes and upgrades whose requirements extend beyond the limited parallelisation capabilities of the existing community software.

The focus of the workshops will be the development of working systems that scale to the immediate needs of the facilities (e.g. Continuum Imaging at AA* scale for SKAO, and Cube Imaging at WSU scale for ALMA), rather than research on new algorithms of low technical readiness level.

Agenda for first workshop (27-29 January 2026)

Day 1 (Tuesday 27 January): Introductions and Status

  • Each organisation gives a presentation (~1 hour with questions) on their status, including a SWOT analysis of their needs and capabilities.
  • Last session draws together themes and topics for the next 2 days

Day 2 (Wednesday 28 January): Workshop on selected topics

Topics of interest from Day 1. These should come out of the Day 1 SWOT analyses, with a focus on inter-operability, expected include:

  • Challenges for continuum imaging
  • Challenges for direction dependent imaging
  • Hardware profiling
  • MSv4 issues
  • Data management

Day 3 (Thursday 29 January): Workshop on selected topics and next meeting.

  • Continuation of Day 2
  • Identification of specific actions and collaborations.
  • Host of next meeting (was thinking of having it in South Africa).
