The newly built SKA HQ was designed by the award-winning international Architecture practice HASSELL to reflect the science and vision of the SKA by fostering a culture of collaboration and communication, with the Council Chamber & auditorium at its heart and the giant Lovell Telescope as an iconic backdrop. The unique character and history of the UNESCO World Heritage Jodrell Bank site allowed to create an inspirational workplace at the home of radio astronomy.

Travel from outside the UK

The nearest airport is Manchester International Airport (MAN). As the busiest airport outside London servicing some 28 million passengers every year, it has direct flights to and from many international destinations, including Amsterdam, Dubai, Paris, London, Frankfurt, etc.

Fast-track access through the airport

If you are in a hurry, you can purchase fast track access through passport control when flying in for £5 and through security when flying out for £6.

Transport links from the airport

Follow signs to The Station (5-15min walk from the terminals) to use the train or Metrolink tram from Manchester airport. Expect a 20min train journey or 40min tram journey to Manchester City Centre.

There is also a direct train link to Wilmslow (5min journey) where there is a range of accommodation available.

Car hire is also available at the airport.

If you decide to use a taxi to get to your hotel from the airport, there are a couple of options including the usual black cabs that you can find just outside any terminal, or Arrow Cars which are often cheaper and allow you to book in advance and online. Uber is also available from the airport.

Travel from within the UK

If travelling by train, you can book through National Rail. We recommend getting off at Macclesfield station, which is part of the Avanti network. Macclesfield station is located 20min from Manchester Piccadilly station and 1h40min from London Euston station.

From Macclesfield station, you can easily catch a taxi to Alderley Edge (15min journey) or to the SKA HQ (20min journey).

If travelling by car, the SKA HQ is located approximately 15min drive from exit 18 on the M6 motorway.
