Your urban bike tour along the progressive architecture of Rotterdam!

After the grand openings of the Markthal, Koolhaas’ de Rotterdam and the spectacularly newly renovated central station, we can safely say Rotterdam has put itself on the international map as one of the most interesting architectural cities of Europe!

But Rotterdam is more than the modern blockbuster-architecture you see at first sight. Throughout the entire 20th century, Rotterdam has been built up, torn down and renewed several times. Modern architectural history is found here.

In 2.5 hours, you’ll crisscross through the city centre, over the striking bridges, along the docks and you’ll get off the bike to experience the majesty of these new beautiful buildings. Our architecture guides are highly knowledgeable, enthusiastic and not afraid to give you their opinion!

This tour can be booked at their website: http://urbanguides.nl/en/tour/rotterdam-bycycle/ (open subscription)

75 years of rebuilding Rotterdam

The Art & Architecture (walking) tour runs through the centre of Rotterdam, from the brand-new railway station Rotterdam Centraal to the spectacular Market Hall. Along the way, it takes striking buildings and beautiful works of arts that have been added to the city over the past 75 years. For after the bombardment of 14 May 1940, a new modern city was built. Right form the start, art enjoyed a prominent place.

Up to this day, there is a unique relationship between the city’s design and sculptures in the public space. OMI – the Office for Metropolitan Information – organizes special bicycle rides and walking tours with the new routemap as the basis. A guide will take you on a journey through the inner city, focusing on art, culture and architecture

Markthal Quarter

16th June – 11:00 am

price

€ 15,00

duration

1,5 hours

start

Ds. Jan Scharpstraat

Rotterdam is collecting new iconic architecture. The city has gained a few legendary projects in a short time such as de Rotterdam (OMA), the new Rotterdam Central and the Markthal (MVRDV). The Markthal is so prominent in the historic inner city – as a building and as a concept – that nowadays, you can safely call it the Markthal Quarter instead of Laurenskwartier.

The area is vibrating with excitement, not only because of the new world famous construction, but shortly the Binnenrotte will be transformed into an oasis of green. The spectacular transformation of the Gelderseplein, has given the Oudehaven a new zest of life.

In a short 1.5 hour tour, our architectural guides will first take you through the Markthal. Where you’ll experience the market floor, the roof terraces of the stands, Arno Coenen’s impressive artwork and last but not least, the timestep of Rotterdam’s archeological department. During this time, the guide will take you into the mind of architect Winy Maas (MVRDV) about the urban areas. Thereafter, the guide will give further explanation of the other redevelopment projects of the Markthal Quarter.

Urban Guides also provides bicycle rent at € 10,- per day and € 8,50 for each additional day.
